I have to admit, I'm mostly self taught when it comes to computers. My first computer was Radio Shack's TRS-80, with great big 8" floppy disks.

I eventually went to college and earned a degree later in life. I always felt I was just a little bit dumber then my counterparts, who already had their degrees and were about 20 years younger than me.

With computers, it is always nice to catch up on the latest technology. I remember talking to a pharmacist once, he said he had to go back to school all the time to learn new things. I think IT is very similar in that technology changes constantly.

Did my degree help me? Well, I did learn new things. I do feel better about myself and more confident in the choices I make. My advice, stay in school and get your degree.

These Tech Camps sound like a wonderful idea for the kids. Kudos for doing this Pete!!!

Anyway, I really enjoyed your article. I suspect I will visit more often now. :)

Thanks very much.

Remy,

It is sooooo cool to see that you rate iD Tech Camps as your #1 way of learning to program. That is what our camp is all about. THank you so much for sharing!

Yeah, I started really trying to learn in fifth grade - and I have to say, that in terms of actually learning stuff? The most helpful things...

#1: iD Tech (I took several years of programming classes)
#2: A couple of friends in high school
#3: Myself
DISTANT #4: College

You don't need CS to learn programming. I started at age 11 and never looked back!

Hi Nathan, Mari, Willow and Christina,

We are seeing an upswing in programming awareness across the country. Kids and Teens want to make their own iPhone apps, and really get into app dev, which is so awesome. We've got to engage the young generation--and make programming fun so they love it. If we can make it fun and note "like school" then the sky is the limit.

Thanks for your comments.

"There is a big myth out there that you have to wait until college to learn about programming."

^ This was my exact experience in college. I'm so glad things are changing and programming is being exposed at a younger age!

There is a big myth out there that you have to wait until college to learn about programming,” said Ingram-Cauchi. “And that when you do finally declare CS as your major, you are a nerd.” That seems to be old-school thinking. The fundamental shift is that students from the 3rd grade, right up to college, now see programming as cool and hip; the buzz surrounding Apple, Facebook, and Google are driving that point home.
