Students in this filmmaking course are introduced to the various stages of production from script writing to interview conducting, camera techniques and video editing. Teens learn how to mark and trim clips in a timeline, add music, filters, transitions, titles, credits and special effects.

The course features industry standard software like Apple® Final Cut Pro®, Adobe® After Effects® and Sony® HXR Mc50u camcorders. If you are preparing for a creative profession, learning Apple® applications will jump start your career because they are the tools the pros use!

Students graduate from the course with a professional-looking short and the skill set to excel in the world of film production. Get ready to find out why making movies is even more fun than watching them! Build a foundation for a career in film and take home your documentary on DVD.

Curriculum At A High Level

Week One: Jump in with an introduction to film genres and a short history of film and video editing. Tell a powerful story by writing an effective treatment, researching shooting locations, and selecting and interviewing subjects for dramatic content. Learn the visual language of film and be introduced to film aesthetics and the fundamentals of the documentary genre. Our instructors will guide you through the principles of camera operation, sound recording and on-location production techniques. Produce short group projects and learn the importance of pre-production, as well as the fundamentals of shooting a high quality, engaging film.

Week Two: Dive into post-production by learning the principles of digital editing and continuity. Using Final Cut Pro® and Adobe® After Effects®, cut scenes together and add effects to heighten the impact of your story. Learn the importance of sound design by mixing voiceovers, music, interviews and ambient sounds together. Upon completion of your project, output your work through DVD authoring or uploading to the web and put together an impressive packet for film festival submission.

Online Portfolio Workshops

Teens spend two nights each week in portfolio-building workshops and create their own online portfolio. Finished portfolios include a bio page and samples of completed projects. Establishing a portfolio sets our participants apart from their peers on college and internship applications.

Industry Leading Curriculum & Instruction

8:1 Ratio, Guaranteed

We guarantee ridiculously small class sizes, with a maximum of 8 students per instructor. Why? Because our teaching philosophy is premised on personalization – your path, at your pace. iD's passionate, adult-only instructors guide students through customized curriculum with 1-on-1 teaching. The immersive environment (typically 5, 6, 7 or 8 students – but never more than 8 per instructor) is ideal for fostering creativity.

Two-Week Intensive Course

Our two-week courses at the Academy provide students with the right amount of time to get comfortable in their field of study and put their knowledge to use with hands-on projects. Students also have ample time to work on their online portfolios, enjoy excursions and tours of nearby facilities, relax with late-night gaming tournaments and explore campus.

Adult-Only Faculty, No Counselors-in-Training

Staff at the Academy have a deep understanding of the software, hardware and technical skills needed to succeed in their competitive industries.  They pass along their knowledge to Academy students, and are able to cover a tremendous amount of material in a two-week period. The reason?  Small ratios, innovative curriculum, an intensive staff training program, and an expectation of excellence.  The end result is an awesome online portfolio—and newfound confidence that comes with accomplishing something BIG.
