Teen Summer Film Academy - Canada
McGill University, Montreal, Quebec
Program Overview
This teen only documentary film camp is located at McGill University in beautiful Montréal, Quebec. Please click here for a two minute online visit of the city. We chose Montréal as our new travel-abroad location because of its reputation as a hub for independent filmmaking. It is a bilingual city with a thriving arts and culture scene and one of the largest student populations in North America. Montréal also makes a beautiful back-drop for our students’ films; with majestic Mount Royal, old-world architecture, historic cathedrals and cobblestone streets. This is an exchange program, so U.S. students will need a valid passport to enter Canada and to return to the U.S.
About McGill University
Film camp students will live and study at the picturesque McGill University. Besides being nestled in downtown Montréal, McGill was our choice for the iD Film Academy because of its international reputation for academic excellence. For the fifth year in a row, McGill University has been named one of the Top 25 universities. With nearly 10,000 universities worldwide, this is a remarkable achievement. McGill is recognized world-wide for excellence in teaching and research.Instruction
The iD Film Academy offers three 2-week sessions of intensive study in documentary filmmaking and post-production for teens. Filming on location in Montréal, students will learn from professional filmmakers and film school students with an insider’s knowledge of the industry and film festival circuit. Students in our teen film camps use Apple® computers and the industry-standard editing suite Apple® Final Cut Studio® 2 and Adobe® After Effects® CS4, to produce and edit a documentary film for their portfolio.Projects
Students are taught how to create a film from start to finish, from writing a treatment to camera operation, editing and DVD authoring. Students will learn the basics of sound design to incorporate voice-overs, sound effects, interviews and music into their films. Students also receive an introduction to film theory through evening film screenings. By discovering the language of production and the importance of marketing, students in our teen filmmaking camps will be able to take their movies from the editing room to the public. Our Recommendations
Through the creation of personal projects and collaborative team projects, our graduates leave the academy with a professional-looking portfolio, media kit and the tools to not only compete, but also excel, in the extremely competitive world of film production. The iD Film Academy is perfect for beginning students looking to break into filmmaking, or advanced students looking to get a leg up on the competition. Our only requirement is that students have a passion for filmmaking.Activities
Take advantage of Montréal’s cultural scene through excursions to museums and/or film centers. Students may be allowed to travel in groups within local boundaries and time constraints with the understanding that these privileges may be enjoyed only if they remain responsible. Our supervising staff will always be in the nearby vicinity to check-in with students. On weekends between session weeks, students may venture out (with iD Staff) to cities like Ottawa and Québec City. Academy students enjoy extra privileges appropriate for their environment and maturity levels. While we maintain standard supervision ratios, teens will still feel a sense of freedom. After each day’s instruction, students may want to spend their evenings engaging in traditional activities like Ultimate Frisbee or soccer; if sports aren’t your thing, you can sign-up for an instructor workshop. Some topics may include stop-motion animation or music composition for film. Evening film screenings will expose students to film theory through deconstruction and analysis.
