Arizona State University Facts

Nickname: Sun Devils

Founded: 1885

Schools at ASU: As one of the largest universities in the nation, ASU allows undergraduate students to take courses in over 250 academic majors. ASU also gives ample opportunity to graduate students, offering more than 100 graduate programs leading to masters and doctoral degrees. These programs are divided into 17 colleges and schools (the largest being the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which houses two dozen programs and departments) and are hosted at four ASU campuses that stretch across the greater Phoenix area.

Tempe Campus: About eight miles east of downtown Phoenix lies ASU’s original, main campus in the heart of Tempe, Arizona. 52,734 students roam the 642 acre campus and the very first building constructed, Old Main, still stands today and is the focal point of the University. Other notable campus landmarks include Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and Palm Walk, which is lined by 111 palm trees and is the main campus entrance way for most students after crossing the famous University bridge. Additionally, the campus has one of the 10 best public university art collections, according to Public Art Review. Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe can be found against the northwest edge of campus and is always bustling with students and visitors. It provides a true college atmosphere with its sidewalks lined with restaurants, bars and popular retailers.

Student Population: About 70,000 with over 50,000 undergraduates and 14,000 graduate students. This is an enormous student population!

Rankings: ASU has continued to make great strides in improving and updating its academics and facilities, leading to its ranking as one of the top five “Up and Coming” universities in the nation. The Fiske Guide to Colleges ranked ASU 93rd in the world in their Academic Ranking of World Universities. In addition, ASU was named by Forbes magazine as one of “America’s Best College Buys.” Campus sustainability has also become a focused area for the University. This has earned them a “B+” grade on the 2009 College Sustainability Report Card, where they earned an “A” in all categories relating to campus operations.

Athletics: ASU takes part in the NCAA’s division I and their Sun Devils compete in the Pac-10 Conference in 20 varsity sports with other schools like USC and UCLA. ASU’s football team (now lead by ex-NFL coach Dennis Erickson) won the prestigious Rose Bowl in 1987 and they have been participants in the Fiesta Bowl five times. In other sports, ASU has historically shown dominance in baseball, mixed archery, women’s golf, mixed badminton, and women’s swimming and diving.
