Colorado State University: Fort Collins Facts
Nickname: Rams
Founded: 1870
Schools at Colorado State University: CSU offers many academic areas of study through the College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, College of Applied Human Sciences, Warner College of Natural Resources, College of Natural Sciences, and the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Student Population: CSU has approximately 24,983 students, with the following breakdown: 20,765 undergraduates, 2,332 master’s students, 1,347 doctoral students, and 539 professional students in the College of Biomedical and Veterinary Medicine. A high percentage of CSU’s students are in-state residents, with 80% of undergraduates hailing from Colorado. With that said, each of the 50 states is represented by members of the student body, along with students from 79 different countries. There is a pretty even split among undergraduate men and women, with 52% of undergraduates being women.
Rankings: Colorado State’s most prestigious program is the Professional Veterinary Medicine program, which is currently ranked second in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. It is also first in the country in terms of federal research dollars. Among public and private national universities, U.S. News and World Report ranked CSU 124th (within the “Top Tier”) and 59th among public universities. Additionally, in its rankings of America’s Best Graduate Schools, Occupational Therapy Master’s ranked 7th, and Career and Technical Education was 8th.
Athletics: A member of the Mountain West Conference (which consists of 8 other universities), CSU’s Rams compete in the NCAA’s Division I and fields 16 sponsored intercollegiate sports (10 for women and 6 for men). CSU has won 9 Mountain West Conference tournament championships and have either won or had a share of 11 regular season titles.

Romer, former Colorado governor; Bill Ritter, former Denver District Attorney; Joey Porter, professional football player and member of 2006 Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
Points of Interest: At the heart of the CSU campus lies an expansive green area (2,065 feet around), known as the Oval. Beautifully lined with 65 American Elm trees, the Oval was once the center of campus and is still a major landmark at Colorado State University. Another major complex, the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital was constructed in 1979. It consists of four main buildings including the Main Hospital, the Horse and Food Animal Hospital, the Large Animal Isolation Facility, and the Raptor Facility. The hospital is located just south of the main campus in Fort Collins, and is a full service hospital. Divided into small and large animal clinics, the hospital annually serves 19,000 small animals and 2,700 large animals from around the world. To say the least, the Veterinary program at Colorado State is one of the most respected in the nation.
