We have chosen Northwestern University to host our summer academic camps for teens and kids because it is one of the country’s leading private research universities and recognized both nationally and internationally for the quality of its educational programs at all levels. Getting to Campus: Our specific location on campus at this Illinois summer camp, along with maps and driving directions, will be found in your Camp Account after you register. O’Hare International Airport is located 15 miles west of Northwestern, approximately a 40 minute drive. Downtown Chicago is located 12 miles south of this summer camp location. Evanston is also accessible by train.
Points of Interest: Places to check out while at Northwestern University include the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, Mary and Leigh Block Museum, Kohl Children’s Museum, and the Grosse Point Lighthouse & Maritime Museum.

Schools at Northwestern University: NU currently has six undergraduate schools, with its most popular being the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences that hosts 51.2% of undergraduate students. 17.2% of the students are enrolled in the McCormick School of Engineering, 14.7% in the School of Communication, 8.4% in the Medill School of Journalism, 5.0% in the Bienen School of Music, and 3.4% in the School of Education. In terms of enrollment, the three largest professional programs are The Kellogg School of Management, the School of Law, and the Feinberg School of Medicine.
Student Population: Northwestern enrolls about 18,000 students a year, with the following breakdown: 8,284 undergraduate, 8,249 graduate, and 1,495 professional students. Females represent a slightly larger portion of the undergrad population at 51.6%. The student body is represented by all 50 states and 50 different countries. The Northwestern University admission process is more selective than most as there were 21,930 applications for the undergraduate Class of 2011 with 5,872 admitted or 26.8%. SAT scores ranged from 2010–2270, with 85% ranked in the top ten percent of their high school class. In 2007, Northwestern enrolled the third-largest total of National Merit Scholars as freshmen (249). In terms of graduation rate, 86% of students graduated after four years and 93% after six years.
Rankings: Northwestern is large, and considered a highly residential research university. It offers over 130 undergraduate programs and 70 graduate and professional programs, and awarded 2,089 bachelor’s degrees, 2,665 masters degrees, 462 doctoral degrees, and 416 professional degrees in 2006–2007. At least 12 completed quarters are required of undergraduate students in order to graduate, however, Northwestern does offer honors, accelerated, and joint degree programs in areas of science, medicine, mathematics, engineering, and journalism.
Athletics: Northwestern is an original member of the Big Ten Conference and the conference’s only private institution. The University fields 19 intercollegiate athletic teams (8 men’s and 11 women’s) that compete at the Division I level in the NCAA. Most notable and successful NU teams include men’s soccer, wrestling, swimming, golf, tennis and women’s tennis, softball, fencing and lacrosse.
Distinguished Alumni & Personnel: Many of those who have attended Northwestern have accomplished greatness in their respective areas, including entertainment, business, sports and politics. This list includes: Academy Award-winning actor/writer/director Warren Beatty; Emmy Award-nominated actor for his work on TV show Scrubs Zach Braff; model Cindy Crawford, Emmy Award-winning actress for TV show Seinfeld Julia Louis-Dreyfus; Chairman and CEO of Citigroup Women and Company Lisa Caputo; President and CEO of Campbell Soup Company Douglas Conant.
Camp Activities for Kids & Teens
Age appropriate fun for kids 7-12 and teens 13-17. Students will receive an average of 5-6 hours of technical instruction per day mixed with breaks, lunch, and fun camp activities we like to call TechReation. Participation in activities is encouraged, but optional. Physical activities may include ultimate frisbee, capture-the-flag, fun teambuilding games, soccer, etc., and other camp activities like Guitar Hero®, video gaming tournaments, social time and more. Each week wraps up with family showcase at 2:00 PM on Friday. Check out the cool projects created by students, meet the instructor, and attend our diploma ceremony.
Attention Illinois Teens! Our summer camps in Illinois at Northwestern University just got even cooler for our teen students. We have specialized teen activities including free time to hang out, movie nights, extra project time, and as always, plenty of gaming. Weekend Stays and Ultimate Gaming Weekends are offered at many iD locations.
Weekend Stays / Ultimate Gaming Weekends are great options for students looking to bridge the gap between two weeks of camp or for students who want to stay and game with us the weekend following their camp week.
Overnight students ages 12-17 at iD Tech Camps, as well as those registered for our Teen Academies (ages 13-18), can bridge the weekend between consecutive overnight camp weeks. As an exception, overnight students ages 10-17 at Stanford University may also participate. The cost is $349 per weekend and is all-inclusive (housing, meals, supervision, gaming, activities, etc). This offering only applies to overnight students and is not stand-alone.
Not a serious gamer? We’ve got you covered. You can take it easy in the labs, play retro games, read a book, play outdoor sports, or just keep a low profile.
