Did you know the co-founder of iD Tech Camps, Kathryn Ingram, is from Fox Chapel? She’s a die-hard Steelers fan. She attended Penn State and now resides in the Silicon Valley in California. We have chosen the CMU campus to host our academic summer camps because it is one of the nation’s leading private research universities. Carnegie Mellon’s position of leadership in the arts and in technology is unusual in higher education today. The institution has become a national leader in technological fields such as computer science, robotics, and engineering. This will be the 9th season housing our Carnegie Mellon University location in the Pittsburgh area, PA.

Our Pittsburgh summer camps, located five miles from downtown Pittsburgh, thrive in the heart of the business and research community in the Oakland district. Bordered by quaint residential neighborhoods and the wooded hills of a scenic park, the 100-acre campus provides an academic environment that combines the best of both worlds: an urban campus in a wooded setting.
Getting to Campus: We do not disclose the precise campus location of this Pennsylvania summer camp until you register. Specific maps and driving directions will be found in your Camp Account. The Pittsburgh International Airport is 22 miles (and approximately 45 minutes driving time) from Carnegie Mellon University. Carnegie Mellon University is an excellent option for a Day Camp and Overnight Camp program.

Rankings: Carnegie Mellon is certainly known for its “tech” heritage. Carnegie Mellon’s status in computer science, engineering, business and economics, public policy and information systems, psychology, and the arts are considered amont the most elite in the world. Carnegie Mellon is impressively ranked 22nd against its peers in “national universities” in the most recent US News and World Report national rankings, the 21st in the world and 17th in the US News and World Report High School Counselor Rankings of National Universities. In the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) ranking of world universities, Carnegie Mellon ranks 12th overall in the USA (20th in the world), 5th in the USA (7th in the world) in the Technology category and 15th in the USA (28th in the world) in the social sciences category. Webometrics ranked Carnegie Mellon 12th in the World. Academic Analytics ranked Carnegie Mellon 4th overall in faculty productivity, which quite an amazing statistic. The university is one of 60 elected members of the Association of American Universities and its academic reputation has led it to be included in Newsweek’s list of “New Ivies”.
Athletics: The CMU Tartans were a founding part of the University Athletic Association of the NCAA Division III. Before WWII, Carnegie Mellon (previously known as Carnegie Tech) played with NCAA Division I teams and in 1939 the Tartan football team won a birth to the NCAA National Championship at the Sugar Bowl. That same year, Robert Doherty, university president at the time, banned the football team from competing in bowl games that ran beyond the regular season. Presently, varsity teams include basketball, track, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, volleyball, tennis, and cheerleading. The main athletic rivals of CMU are Case Western Reserve University and Washington University in St. Louis. The Tartans have a deep tradition of rivalry with the Washington University in St. Louis Football team.

Camp Activities for Kids & Teens
Age appropriate fun for kids 7-12 and teens 13-17. Students will receive an average of 5-6 hours of technical instruction per day mixed with breaks, lunch, and fun camp activities we like to call TechReation. Participation in activities is encouraged, but optional. Physical activities at these Pennsylvania summer camps may include ultimate Frisbee, capture-the-flag, fun teambuilding games, soccer, etc., and other camp activities like Guitar Hero®, video gaming tournaments, social time and more. Each week wraps up with family showcase at 2:00 PM on Friday. Check out the cool projects created by students, meet the instructor, and attend our diploma ceremony.
Attention Pennsylvania Teens! Our summer camps in Pennsylvania at Carnegie Mellon University just got even cooler for our teen students. We have specialized teen activities including free time to hang out, movie nights, extra project time, and as always, plenty of gaming. Stay the Weekend at iD this Summer!
Weekend Stays and Ultimate Gaming Weekends are offered at many iD locations.
Weekend Stays / Ultimate Gaming Weekends are great options for students looking to bridge the gap between two weeks of camp or for students who want to stay and game with us the weekend following their camp week.
Overnight students ages 12-17 at iD Tech Camps, as well as those registered for our Teen Academies (ages 13-18), can bridge the weekend between consecutive overnight camp weeks. As an exception, overnight students ages 10-17 at Stanford University may also participate. The cost is $349 per weekend and is all-inclusive (housing, meals, supervision, gaming, activities, etc). This offering only applies to overnight students and is not stand-alone.
Not a serious gamer? We’ve got you covered. You can take it easy in the labs, play retro games, read a book, play outdoor sports, or just keep a low profile.
