iD Programming Academy - Advanced Programming for the Java AP Exam

About This Course/ Featured Software

Prerequisite: Experience using Java and knowledge of object oriented programming methods.

Need a boost for your upcoming AP® Exam in Computer Science? This computer science class focuses on the AP Java subset and outlines the features of Java that may appear on the AP® Computer Science A Examination. The curriculum will cover language features that may be tested and standard Java Library Methods required for the exam. Additionally, the course will summarize required elements, useful concepts and relevant resources for continuing study.

Please Note: This is a prep course and does not guarantee all students will pass the exam.

Curriculum At A High Level

Week One: Begin with an introduction to the Java programming language and the Java Programming IDE, Eclipse, and learn how to make a basic program. Students will review important core computer science concepts such as variables, operators, and basic program I/O, learning about string manipulation, boolean logic, and basic control flow. Put your skills to the test by creating Java programs to enhance fundamental Java programming knowledge. Practice these important skills with AP® Exam related exercises both off and on the computer.

Week Two: Develop core Object Oriented Programming skills for the AP® exam such as methods, classes, and string manipulation. Continue learning concepts like arrays, Lists, ArrayLists, and exception checking. Work on more complex and involved Java programming projects to refine and practice these challenging concepts. Take sample AP® exams, practicing the multiple choice, and free response elements of the test. Filling in any conceptual gaps in order to have a thorough and strong understanding of all the elements of Java and Computer Science, students will graduate with the knowledge and confidence needed to tackle the Computer Science AP® exam.

The Academy Experience

University Immersion

Teens experience independent college life in a supervised environment. This pre-college program is overnight-only, so teens stay in real college dorms, eat in dining halls and get a feel for daily life on campus. Choose the recommended Weekend Stay option to have even more time to explore campus and local attractions.

Software Repository System Utilization

iD Programming Academy students will use professional, industry-standard tools while at the Academy, including software repositories. These cutting edge technologies allow aspiring programmers to collaborate, share projects, and work in real-world coding environments. Students will not only learn to revise code and push it to the repository while in session, but also have full download access to retrieve their projects after their session. Establishing a repository sets our participants apart from their peers on college and internship applications.

Continuing Education Units

Build up your resume for college by earning Continuing Education Units. Receive an official transcript from Stanford Continuing Studies (available for purchase at all Academy locations). CEU Credits demonstrate that students have completed course content of college-level difficulty.

We do not arrange transportation for our students. For your convenience, we have created a user-friendly carpool application located in My Account (you must be enrolled to use it). All transportation to and from camp is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. There are transportation services that past students have utilized, which can be found through a web search. The Academy is not affiliated with any such company and thus cannot be held accountable for clients’ use of outside transportation services.
