Program Overview

How did the program begin?
Our CEO, Pete Ingram-Cauchi, studied, lived and worked in Spain, including Sevilla, Madrid, and Barcelona. He speaks fluent Spanish and has an affinity for the Spanish culture. While living in Spain, he developed a network of friends and contacts that ultimately came together and meshed with iD Tech Camps. This program is the perfect blend of cultural immersion, Spanish instruction and documentary filmmaking—even for beginners. This is a program that Pete is personally involved in overseeing. This acclaimed program has been successfully running for 5 seasons now. Back to Top

What are the different Tracks?
This season we are excited to be offering two tracks as part of our iD Spain Program.

Track Uno: Filmmaking, Spanish & Culture (Includes all program details).
Perfect for beginning through advanced filmmakers, this study abroad and teen filmmaking prgram allows students to create the documentary of a lifetime. Students will film the beautiful town of Cádiz - beaches, cathedreals, cobblestone streets, ancient buildings - we use these as the backdrop for each film. This is an amazing way to get to know people, the city, and the culture of Cádiz!

The program objective is to produce a documentary about your trip to Spain by capturing interesting footage of Spanish sites & culture, while incorporating some of your newly acquired or improved Spanish language skills. You will be provided with your own Canon® digital camera and high-end Apple® computer for editing.

Track Dos: Spanish &: Culture (includes all program details ecept filmmaking)
This track is perfect for returning students and those who want more free time to explore Cádiz. Students will live with a Spanish Family in the beautiful city of Cádiz, Spain, enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine, and tour the ancient cities of Cádiz, Sevilla and Puerto de Santa María.

Both Tracks: Each day, students take part in Spanish language courses. The Spanish classes involve a total Spanish immersion experience for teen. Access to student services, such as on-site support, academic counseling, computer lab, social activities, cultural visits and weekend excursions, are all included. Weekend excursions include trips to Sevilla and Puerto de Santa María.

In the argernoon there will be time for a siesta (a favorite Andalucían past time), time to relax at home, or time to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Cádiz. (Students in the Track Uno will return to the editing lab in the afternoon. Students in Track Dos will have more free time to explore Cádiz).

Tell me about the city of Cádiz.
Cádiz, the oldest city in Western Europe, is a small city of 160,000 inhabitants, situated on the southernmost coast of Spain, very close to Portugal. Not yet invaded by mass tourism, the city preserves the legacy of the different cultures that have populated it (Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Christians) in its numerous monuments, museums, plazas, and charming narrow streets.

For those who seek fine white sand beaches, Cádiz offers itself as the ideal city. In the small town, everything is within walking distance or a short cab or bus ride. It is also worth mentioning the traditional friendly hospitality of the people of Cádiz, which makes it a safe and inviting place for the exchange of learning and culture. I’m concerned about safety...
Safety for students is priority #1. We chaperone students beginning from the flight into JFK, introduce them to their families in Spain and escort them to our excursions within Spain. Our chaperones attend classes. Students live and walk in pairs to classes, to the beach, etc. This is our 5th season running the Spain program, and we take safety precautions seriously. Back to Top

Travel, Housing & Activities

How do I get there? What about flights?
iD Tech Camps has reserved a limited number of plane tickets to Spain at a discounted group rate and will have these available for purchase on a first-come first-serve basis. Upon arrival in Spain, our group will be shuttled by bus to a brief orientation meeting where students will meet their families. Click here for more details. Back to Top

Where will I live?
You will stay in Cádiz, Spain, a beautiful Spanish beach town. We pair students by gender and age range to room together with a carefully selected host family. All of these families have been hand-selected, interviewed, and screened by our partner language institute. Many of the families have been housing students year after year because they enjoy opening their homes and families to foreign students.

The families will provide you all your meals of authentic Spanish cuisine; they will do your laundry, and immerse you in the Spanish culture. The best way to practice your Spanish is with your Spanish family! If you register for this program with a friend and would like to have them as a roommate, we will try to accommodate. Just let us know and we’ll try to make these arrangements. Back to Top

What will we do when we are not in class?
By popular request from past students, we will be having more free time to explore the beautiful city of Cádiz with an extended weekend of free time. During this time we will have organized cultural activities, such as a beach party, a "tapas" crawl, or a night at the disco (supervised), to give students a chance to immerse themselves in the local culture. These activities will be organized and chaperoned by iD Tech Camps and the language institute staff.

Additionally, you will take incredible excursions to Sevilla and Puerto de Santa Maria in southern Spain and even attend an authentic Spanish bullfight. For more information, please click here. Back to Top

Will I have free time?
Yes! There will be opportunities for free time to explore the city of Cádiz, hang out with new friends, go to the beach, go shopping, and experience the life of a Spaniard.

Safety and risk management is always our top concern, so we do require that any free time is spent in groups or in the "buddy system" so that no one is ever out alone. While in Spain, the iD Tech Camps coordinators will have a Spanish cell phone so the students can reach us at any point in time. Back to Top

Prerequisites

What are the age requirements?
This is a teen study abroad program for high school students. The ages are 14-17. However, we can make exceptions for students who are 13 but entering high school the following fall or 18 year-olds who have just finished their senior year. We will not accept anyone outside of a high school age range. Back to Top

Do I need a Passport?
A valid U.S. Passport is required for travel to Spain. A Tourist Visa is NOT necessary. If you do not currently have a valid US Passport, please go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/get_840.html for more details. Back to Top

What is the requirement for the Spanish language portion of this program?
The desire to learn about a new culture, that’s it. Although previous Spanish experience is strongly recommended, it is not required. We work very closely with our partner language institute to place each student in the appropriate class level and we constantly reassess the situation to make sure each student is comfortable. Back to Top

What is the requirement for the Documentary Filmmaking portion of this program?
A strong desire to learn Digital Video/Movie-Making. We accept all levels of filmmaking in this program – from students who have never done any digital filming or editing, to those who have dabbled with iMovie, to students who are advanced with Final Cut Pro.

We cater the instruction to each individual student’s needs and give one-on-one instruction. Those students just learning digital video will grasp the basics of filming and editing; while more advanced students will delve more deeply into video and sound editing and even special effects.
