Invest Wisely This Summer
I’ve got two young boys. My sister, Alexa (iD Founder and COO) has a young daughter and a new baby boy. Despite the young ages of our kids, they are going to camp this summer. Unfortunately, they are not old enough to attend iD Tech just yet…but that day is approaching! My oldest is not yet five, and already my wife and I are registering him for his second season of summer camp.
Don’t Waste Your Money
If your family is anything like mine, you are very sensitive about what you are spending. There are two rules we have in our family right now: 1. Don’t make any more bad investments. 2. Don’t waste money. These two points have been amplified daily as we pare back our Starbucks runs, cook at home more, shop at Costco and think of a staycation over a more expensive traditional summer vacation. Many camps are currently offering savings when registering for camp early.
Selecting a Camp
This summer, like last summer, we are choosing a camp for our oldest son that is fun, educational, and has a strong reputation for safety and staff training. We want to make sure the camp is of high caliber. We want the best for our kids. In my opinion, an educational camp is an investment. Education is something that nobody can take away from my kids. Here are a couple things we look for when selecting a camp, and I thought these yardsticks might help you too.
- Are the campers to staff ratios small? iD Tech Camps has an average 6:1 ratio, for personalized instruction.
- Who are the counselors? iD Tech recruits instructors from top universities.
- What is the camp’s reputation? iD Tech is the #1 tech camp in the country. We’re a family company, and we’ve been around for twelve seasons.
- What are the safety practices of the camp? Does the camp follow American Camp Association guidelines?
Skills for Life: A Lifelong Investment
When we select a camp, we are making an investment in our kids. It is important to choose wisely. Yes, camps can seem expensive, but watching the losses mount in our 401Ks can seem pretty expensive too. My wife and I recently had the guts to open up our 401Ks (yeah, they are down about 50%–sound familiar?) Then I started thinking to myself… You dump money into your 401K, then it tanks. You take the leap from renting a house, to buying a house, and now it’s depreciating in value-or under water completely. College tuition is coming down the pike, and the costs will rise exponentially. But right now, this summer, I can send my kids to camp knowing they’ll have a blast, make friends, create memories, and pick up some very useful skills they can tuck away for a rainy day (or put to use immediately). I really want them to have something to smile about and camp is almost always a homerun. Imagine…
- Developing a website or graphic arts portfolio from scratch.
- Learning the logic and skills behind making a 2D video game or 3D video game.
- Learning teambuilding skills in our filmmaking or robotics courses.
- Learning computer programming in C++ or Java.
Summer Camp Versus a Costly Summer Vacation
Camp, when done right, builds self-esteem, is educational, tons of fun, and a heck of a lot cheaper than having the whole family jump on a plane-paying for a hotel, food, car rental, etc.
This year we really are planning that staycation. Last year, maybe the reason was that gas prices were so high. Remember $4 gas? This year, it seems the arguments for a staycation are up tenfold. But, as my wife reminded me, “if you want me to keep my sanity, the boys still have to go somewhere, sometime, this summer. I need a break too.” Am I really going to argue with her? No way!
Regardless of whether you send your child to iD Tech Camps, or another summer camp, you want to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck. You don’t want to make a bad investment and don’t want to waste your money-not this summer, not in these times.
My sister and I are proud to offer a high caliber technology program at 60 locations nationwide and in Canada. We offer day camps for ages 7-17, overnight camps for ages 10-17, and teen academies for students ages 13-18. Our goal is to deliver the best and our reputation and loyal following seem to indicate we are doing just that.
Imagine the smile you’ll see on your child’s face when he or she comes home with a video game they made from scratch…Or they explain to you the differences between Flash and Dreamweaver, and Photoshop and HTML, upon seeing the website they created..or they tell you about the engineering principles behind the Robot they built….or tell you about the movie editing skills they learned. I think it is safe to say that you’ll see some serious confidence, you’ll feel your child has a leg up, and you’ll know you made a wise investment. Your only mistake? Not sending your kid to iD Tech Camps earlier (oh, and trusting a little too much in that bank stock).
