Do Something Big!

Meet Marc

After two weeks at iD Tech Camps, eighth grader Marc is, well, right on the mark. He did “something BIG” over his two weeks of summer camp at UC Berkeley. He learned C++ to program his own game, Mazetron, and then took a Programming iPhone® Apps course and transformed his game into an app. Now it is featured in the Apple® Store and earning money from sales as far away as Great Britain and Japan. What’s Marc doing with his hard-earned money? He’s coming back to iD Tech Camps next summer. Right on, Marc!

iD: Which iD locations have you attended?

M: For both seasons, I have attended summer camp in California at UC Berkeley.

iD: What do you do for fun when you aren’t at our summer computer camp?

M: I enjoy playing water polo, creating film shorts, camping and engaging in computer programming.

iD: What are your favorite things about our summer camp?

M: iD Tech Camps provides the opportunity to learn a ton through each course – but it’s fun too. We get to play computer games and sports during breaks, which is nice because it balances out the day. Not to mention the food is good too!

iD: Is iD a good place to make friends?

M: Yes, definitely. Work is done in small groups, and as the week goes on, you really get to know the people in your group. You eventually become friends because everybody has similar interests and goals.

iD: What are your future goals?

M: Making more iPhone apps is a goal of mine, and I’d really like to challenge myself and make apps that involve more complexity. I’m only in 8th grade right now, but I would like to attend UC Berkeley when the time comes.

iD: How has iD impacted these goals?

M: I had an interest in programming before attending camp, but iD Tech Camps taught me the C++ and Objective C skills I needed to actually create iPhone apps. After camp I was able to publish my first game – called Mazetron – which is currently featured in the Apple Store. I’m actually earning money from it!

iD: What’s your favorite tech gadget?

M: It has to be the iPhone 4 – I am always on it.

iD: What’s your favorite video game?

M: I really enjoy The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess.

iD: What’s the #1 way you communicate with your friends?

M: I’d have to say primarily through email.

iD: Why do you keep coming back to iD?

M: Just as I said, it’s hard to beat the combination of learning useful skills and having fun while doing so.

iD: Any advice for future iD Tech campers?

M: I’d like to tell future campers to never give up on whatever it is you want to do in life. And, even after camp has ended and summer has come to a close, don’t stop learning. Learning at iD Tech Camps is so efficient, but during the school year there are always opportunities to learn on your own.

iD: Anything else you’d like to add?

M: Just that I’m spending more time working on a few different iPhone apps. So, be sure to look out for some very cool new apps, and they may even be mine!

Check out some of the cool courses Marc mentioned. Register early and do something big with iD this summer!
