do something BIG!
Meet Sam

Sam attended our Connecticut summer camps held at Sacred Heart University for 6 consecutive seasons. Already accepted to Champlain College as a video game design major, Sam says the school’s admission office was extremely impressed with the portfolio he created at iD Tech Camps. Sam goes into detail about his passion for video games, and why he thinks video game development is a great career choice.
Q: What’s your hometown and state?
A: Shelton, Connecticut.
Q: What locations did you attend?
A: I attended the Sacred Heart University location for 6 consecutive years. During that time, I took Video Game Creation and multiple 3D Game Design and Game Modding courses.
Q: What are your favorite things about our summer camp?
A: The whole atmosphere of the camp, really. The way everyone is into the same things I like doing makes everything so enjoyable. As I said, I attended for 6 straight seasons, and each summer I learned new things and met new people.
Q: How has iD Tech Camps inspired you?
A: iD has inspired me to be more creative and to look more closely at things. Generally, it’s given me great attention to detail and design. Also, I’ve definitely become more social and I still keep in touch with a lot of the people I met at camp. I’ve made plenty of friends, and I see most of them when we all return each summer.
Q: What’s your favorite tech gadget?
A: My iPhone®, without a doubt…at least until I get my hands on the iPad®.
Q: What do you do for fun when you aren’t at our computer camp?
A: Obviously I like to play video games, but I also like to draw and play Dungeons and Dragons.
Q: Do you plan to attend college? Where?
A: I’ve already been accepted to Champlain College for their “Video Game Art and Animation” major. I was able to create a portfolio of 6 years of work designed while at iD Tech Camps. This really amazed the admissions office at Champlain. There’s no doubt that my portfolio gave me an upper-hand when trying to get into school.
Q: Can you explain your passion for game development?
A: I’ve always had a real passion for creating stories and settings, and video games are an effective way to realize these things.
Q: Why do you feel game development is a good career choice?
A: I think that more conventional cultural mediums are nearing the ends of their lives, unless something major happens. The video game industry is a very lucrative one, giving plenty of opportunities for game artists and animators. I suppose in a way, game development is a bit like making a work of art.
Q: What’s the #1 way you communicate with your friends?
A: Good old fashioned face-to-face talking.
Q: Any advice for future iD Tech Camps students?
A: If you ever stop having fun with a project, the project will suffer. Just keep thinking of new and better ways of doing something.
Q: Anything else you’d like to add?
A: Only that, the first chance I get, I’m applying to get a counselor position at iD Tech Camps!
